Water Resource as the source of economic development of Nepal

Water is the essential source of energy to run small, medium, and large-scale industries which are sources of economical development in Nepal. The economic development of our country highly depends upon natural resources. According to HEMS in 2015, Nepal cover more than 2.27% of water in the world. Through looking out Wikipedia Nepal isn’t at 2nd rich water resources country in the world, Nepal is at 41 position and 2nd position belongs to Russia.

Even Nepal is rich in water resources but failed to utilize its resources properly. Being an agricultural country where 66% of people are farmers, the farmers are not supposed to get water properly on their farms which directly hamper the economic development of the nation.

There are more than 6,000 rivers in Nepal where the total water power potentiality is about 83,000 Megawatts out of which only 42,000 are only produced. If fully water power potentiality is used properly then water resources can be the source of economical development in Nepal.

Importance of Water Resource in Nepal for Economic Development are:-

1. Growth of Agriculture

As an agricultural country, water plays an important role in the development of Agriculture . Irrigation is the one way to increase the amount of production in Nepal. Economical growth of the country is possible through the development of agriculture where the majority (66%)of cultivated is done.

2. Development of Transportation and Communication

Water is one of the main sources of energy. Energy generated from water can be used to run electronic means of transportation which leads to the development of Transporation. Accordingly, modern ways of communication are possible from radio, television, email, etc are possible from generating energy from water resources.

3. Development of tourism industries

Nepal is rich in natural resources like rivers, lakes, waterfalls, etc which add beauty to the nation and tourism depends upon the natural beauty of the country. Nepal has over 6000 rivers which add + point in the tourism sector and the development of the tourism sector increased the economic development of Nepal.

4. Conservation of forest resources

In Nepal, Firewood provides 75% of the domestic uses in the country. The development of hydroelectricity replace the use of firewoods which caused a decrease in deforestation which helps to preserve forest resources.

5. Employment Opportunities

Proper utilization of water helps in the growth of agriculture, industries, hydropower, and the tourism sector. Many people can get employment opportunities in these sectors
